Starting Over

It’s been a long two and half years since the last post. Career-wise it’s been fantastic. I created a podcast that got national attention and a huge following, and I interviewed so many incredible people. I curated over fifteen exhibitions at an art museum that I worked, and I ran multiple programs that influenced and supported so many young people.

But the toll was heavy, I started to draw less and less, while the desire to become a storyboard artist remained resolute. I worked on I believe five projects since the last post. The teams were great and very supportive, and I learned so much. But when it came time to transition to the big leagues I didn’t have what it took. And I knew it was because I shifted my focus from what was important.

Recently I watched Marvel’s Echo on Disney+ and experienced a strange sensation. I knew many of the actors on that show, and the storyboard artists, one whom I considered a friendly acquaintance, and another is a friendly social media acquaintance who was the storyboard artist on of all things, Bill and Ted 3. For the first time I really felt conflicted that I was missing the movement that is happening in Native American storytelling, and it upset me. When I woke upthe next morning I still was stuck with this feeling. On the third day, I woke up with the exact same tug in my chest and knew it was time to make the shift. So I turned in my resignation letter in my next meeting with the CEO.

By the end of the summer I hope to be in California working in the industry. I’m going to spend the next five months preparing and building up my samples for work. Enough time was burned over the last two decades and it’s time I focus on my passion. And maybe work on Bill and Ted 4.

Its been a year

Since I last entered something I was in the depth of COVID, catching it from my father who then later passed in part from it. While I was fortunate enough to keep my day job, work took over and I wasn’t able to be creative. I did get brought on to a film project that later dried up. It’s been a tough one. But I don’t plan give up, I plan to carry on. Here’s a few sketches I offer from today.

Bill and ted 3

One of my main inspirations to become a storyboard artist was to be the storyboard artist for Bill and Ted 3. This was all before anything about a third film was announced. Unfortunately I didn’t know how (and still) to get connected to the production company. None the less I’m super happy the got made and wishing them nothing but success in the film. As apart of their media campaign they did do a fan contest in which I entered. I have no expectations of winning, but I entered it anyway. The image I made is okay, but it wasn’t what I wanted. I initially worked in Photoshop with the image, then due to travel finished it in Procreate on my iPad. But the image file wouldn’t transfer so I had to quicky recreate the image then assumed the time of day the deadline was midnight, but turned out it was at noon. So I scrambled to finish it, which I did, but I’ve accepted that it made not be included. None the less I enjoyed it and I hope you like the image.

Under the tUscan suN

Recently I watched Under The Tuscan Sun, with my wife. Now, this isn’t the first for me seeing this film, and I rather enjoy it. But this time I watched it with a critical eye and I have to admit I enjoyed the characters in this story. Just good fun characters. Here’s one that gave me a smile.

Sharp

In the military we struggled with sexual assault and harassment. A number of us, after tired of reporting soldiers finally stood up and actively protected soldiers from predators that our leadership failed to protect. The point of this drawing is to demonstrate that sexual abuse in the military starts with “harmless conversations “.

COVID19 has kept us home, I’ve been working on my first illustrator job in a book. I can’t share those images now but it’s been a blast. Here is something I did during a zoom meeting tonight however…

Life drawings…sorta

Tonight was a great night as I participated in an online life drawing session by Academy of Art University Alumni and faculty Tricia and Sarah. What made it especially memorable for me is that it was my first life drawing since my Academy days. Here they are…

2 princesses

One wonders what the world of the 80s and 90s were like for Bill and Ted’s Princesses?

An illuStration Inspired by the podcast “astonishing legends”

After each cold opening of this amazing podcast, co-host Forrest Burgess starts off each script with “Aaaand we’re back!”

This image was inspired by Thierry characterization of Ananias Dare’s return to the Roanoke Colony after a three year absence. The joke is that they were all gone (and never found).

Fargo leAdership

I attended the Fargo Native American Commission meeting yesterday and was struck that the entire commission is made up of accomplished and powerful women. This warmed my heart and gives me hope for our community. #draw #illustration #storyboard #artofinstagram #nativeamerican #indigenous #leadership #inspired #fargo @fargomoorhead

School sports

As a kid, I played less than ten minutes of basketball between eighth and ninth grade. I wasn’t good, and the team and coach let me know. It’s why I never committed to sports afterwards. But I learned to draw, and many great people let me know I could be great. Do what you love. Build on it. Don’t waste time on things that don’t make you happy. #draw #illustration #storyboard #art #sketch #artofinstagram @procreate @lightboxexpo

My favorite comic. He shocks us and makes us realize that we can’t take ourselves so seriously. At the same time we need to look at things at bit more deeply. #davechappelle #art #storyboard #artofinstagram #illustration #sketch #comics #standup #standupcomedy #storyboardartist @procreate @lightboxexpo #digitalart

EarlY morning sketch

Sometimes there nothing better than just enjoying a coffee in the early morning with the puppies. But I caution you, giving your puppies too much coffee results in super hyper puppies.
